The River Book est une installation conçue pour la ville de Jiaxing. La municipalité chinoise a demandé à YokYok d’imaginer une sculpture monumentale pour l’aménagement d’un nouveau parc se déployant en promenade le long d’un des 9 canaux de la ville.
The River Book est une interprétation en volume de cette géographie singulière et de l’histoire de la ville. Le plan des neuf canaux est pris comme point de départ puis levé et relié à celui des bordures de la ville, représenté au sol. Une architecture toute en torsion apparait, invitant ainsi le visiteur à approcher. La matérialité de l’objet consiste en l’addition de différentes couches transparentes générées par des élastiques tendus. Ces larges surfaces déployées évoquent l’industrie textile de la soie propre à la région de Jiaxing et du Grand Canal qui la traverse.

The River Book is an installation designed for the city of Jiaxing. The Jiaxing government asked to the studio to think about an artwork that could take place in a new linear pedestrian park along one of the nine rivers of the city.
The River Book is a volumetric interpretation of the geography and the history of the city. The map of the 9 rivers, taken as a starting point, is raised and merged to the boundaries of the city map represented on the ground. It results in a dancing swirl appealing the visitor to come closer.
The materiality of the object consists in overlapping different layers of transparent screens made of tense elastic ropes. These wide waving strips evoke the silk and textile industry heritage of Jiaxing and the Grand Canal flowing through the city.
