The Chords est une installation temporaire conçue pour l'ouverture du Freedom Forum d'Oslo dans la halle Hoymagasinet en Norvège. HRF et l’agence Moonageevents ont invité YokYok à réfléchir et concevoir une installation in-situ pour cet espace singulier. Le défi consistait à créer une installation agissant comme un canevas pour la soirée : le cocktail, le défilé de mode, puis la fête. YokYok a proposé de tendre des fils de laine au-dessus de l'ensemble en utilisant la structure existante pour une économie de moyens. La laine tendue relie les deux côtés de la grange. « The Chords » évoque les liens de solidarité entre les peuples et résonne avec le propos de la Human Rights Foundation.

Les intentions de YokYok étaient d'occuper tout l'espace entre le bar et la scène. L'installation est plus haute au milieu et plus basse près de la scène et du bar pour souligner la monumentalité de l'espace. Le sol et la circulation restent libres, pour toute la durée de l’évènement.

Le Freedom Forum d'Oslo a invité la styliste Louise Xin Couture à présenter un spectacle sur son travail axé sur le travail forcé des Ouïghours et l'esclavage moderne.

The Chords utilise des cônes de laine naturelle en fin de stock provenant de la filature italienne Filpucci, qui seront réutilisés pour la conception de meubles dans le cadre d'un travail de recherche mené par YokYok. « L'idée était de profiter des structures des projecteurs pour éclairer la laine. Les lumières font apparaître la matière, encore davantage lorsque l'arrière-plan est sombre. À son tour, la laine cache les structures métalliques qui maintiennent les projecteurs et les haut-parleurs. Avec une configuration en forme de X en plan, nous pouvons éviter de toucher les structures, laissant les techniciens travailler pour installer l'éclairage avant le spectacle. Ce principe offre une liberté totale de direction des fils sur une travée. »

YokYok aime faire beaucoup avec peu. La laine permet une efficacité maximale pour occuper l'espace avec très peu de matériel. L'équipe YokYok voyage léger (peu d'outils et de matériaux). Toute l'installation tient dans les bagages (9 kg de laine + détails de fixation) et la structure de l'espace fait le reste. Les détails de fixation ont été fabriqués à la main avec des sangles recyclées et des cales en bois peintes avec une peinture à la farine et au charbon cuisinée par YokYok. Toute l'installation a été préparée avant d'être montée sur place en raison des calendriers serrés de l’évènementiel.

The Chords is a temporary installation designed for the Oslo Freedom Forum opening at Hoymagasinet in Norway. HRF and Moonageevents invited YokYok to think and design an In-situ installation for this singular space. The challenge was to create an installation acting as a canvas for the night: the cocktail, the fashion show and then the party. YokYok proposed to tense lights threads of wool above the assembly using the existing structure for an economy of means. The tense wool links both sides of the barn together. «The Chords» evokes links of solidarity between people and resonates with Human Rights Foundation’s purpose.

YokYok’s intentions were to occupy the whole space between the bar and the stage. The installation is higher on the middle and lower near the stage and the bar to enhance the monumentality of the space. It let the ground and circulation free, for the people and the fashion show.

Louise Xin Couture
The Oslo Freedom Forum invited the fashion designer Louise Xin Couture to perform a show about her work focusing on Uyghur forced labour and modern slavery.

The Chords uses end-of-stock cones of natural wool from Italian mill Filpucci that will be re-used for furniture design within the scope of a research work led by YokYok. «The idea was to take advantage of the spot lights trusses to light up the wool. The lights make the wool appear, even more when the background is dark. In turn, the wool hides the metallic trusses that hold the spots and speakers. With a X configuration in plan we can avoid touching the trusses, letting the technicians work to set up the lighting before the show. This principle offers full freedom of movement for the threads within one span.»

YokYok likes to do more with less. The wool allows maximum efficiency to occupy the space with very few material. The YokYok team travels with few tools and materials. All the installation fits in the luggages (9kg of wool + fastening details) and the structure of the space does the rest. The fastening details were handcrafted by YokYok with recycled straps and wood cleats. All the installation was prepared before to be mounted quickly on site due to the tight schedule proper to events.
